U.I.J x minä perhonen Hostel Renovation Project

This collaboration between U.I.J and Japanese design brand minä perhonen spanned over a year of preparation, crossing Tokyo and Tainan. Through countless discussions on fabric textures, layering, and intricate details, the project culminated in the selection of the original "dop" fabric, specially developed for interior furnishings. With its dual-tone, double-sided design, "dop" creates distinct visual atmospheres inside and outside the hostel beds.

The fabric design uniquely blends minä perhonen's iconic embroidered “tambourine” pattern with the jacquard “fogland”, inspired by the landscapes of travel. The exclusive fabric pattern arrangement highlights Japanese textile craftsmanship, creating a serene sanctuary for travelers.

Extending beyond the hostel beds, the fabric is also featured in public areas. Pillows incorporating the same material are placed in the 3F Hello Salon, fostering an intimate connection between textiles, space, and people in a way that resonates deeply with travelers.

It's made up of 25 small, uneven grains that form a circle, and the circle continues forever. The uneven grains drawn freehand and the circle made up of those grains express the beauty born from the harmony of imperfect things, which is similar to our society.
Since the presentation in 2000, it has become a symbolic pattern of minä perhonen, a design loved beyond the borders of countries and regions, and it continues to make many more journeys than we have ever made.

Inspired by the beautiful scenery that Mr. Akira Minagawa, the designer, saw during his travels, this fabric depicts a misty winter forest with birds resting here and there. It embodies new imaginative possibilities through textile design.
This jacquard fabric integrates multiple techniques, such as three-dimensional, lustrous velvet and loop weaving. It perfectly embodies the aesthetics of travel memories intertwined with design while simultaneously revitalizing the local textile industry.
"dop"
It's an originally-developed fabric that has two contrasting vivid colors on both sides. The fabric was initially made for interior fabric for furniture, in aim to enjoy the changing color from abrasion over the years. The frayed fabric also becomes an artform and appreciate the evolution.
